Mulligan is a Bright Falls Sheriff Station Deputy Sheriff who appears in the mini series Bright Falls, as well as the video game Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2.

Biography[]

Events of Bright Falls (mini-series)[]

When Jake Fischer visits the Oh Deer Diner in Episode 4, he spots Shel Dyck throwing rocks at a lamp post and Deputy Mulligan's attempt to halt the vandalism. Mulligan stops his patrol car near the woman and gets out of the car. Mulligan demands that she stop, but instead get a rock hurled at him. He attempts to arrest her and puts her in the back of his car, but not before she bites him in the hand. He goes into the Diner, shows his bleeding hand to Rose and asks for a towel to stop the bleeding.

Mulligan's last appearance in the series is in Episode 6. After Sam Smith's mysterious disappearance, Mulligan goes to the Mountain Air Motel to ask if anyone there had seen Smith. Because Jake is the only current guest there, he visits his room. Jake lets him in and Mulligan sees that the interior of the room has been completely destroyed. Jake, thanks to his camera, is pretty sure he himself destroyed his own room but doesn't tell Mulligan this. Instead he comes up with the excuse that he left the door open and a wild animal wandered by. To Jake's surprise, Mulligan observes that the evidence points towards a big deer stag and shows him several telltale signs to back up his point. The deputy then lightly remarks that it would have been a very good hunting trophy and he can't wait to tell his friends about it. It seems that Mulligan did not suspect Jake as the cause of the damage.

Events of Alan Wake[]

While Mulligan makes no physical appearances in game, he is called in to assist the manhunt for Alan Wake by FBI Agent Robert Nightingale. He voices his distrust of Nightingale over the local police scanners and takes Barry Wheeler and Rose Marigold into custody. He is later heard via a park ranger's radio playing in an observation tower, suggesting that a doctor be called for Rose, who has been touched by the Dark Presence. Once again he is heard over the airwaves later, when being interviewed at the local radio station by Pat Maine. He shrugs off most of Maine's questions elusively.

Events of Alan Wake 2[]

Mulligan is one of the deputies found at the murder site of Robert Nightingale. He and Thornton assist with FBI agents Saga Anderson and Alex Casey, but are audibly apprehensive about outsiders joining the investigation. The two are eventually revealed to be members of the Cult of the Tree, working with the Koskela Brothers to fend off Taken and the Dark Presence from Bright Falls. However, at some point, likely influenced by Scratch's writing and Alan Wake's editing of Return, the two accidentally kill a wandering woman, Monica Thompson, whom they thought was Taken. Agreeing to cover up their deed, they dump her body in the Huotari Well at Coffee World to avoid suspicion.

Wracked with guilt, coupled with the influence of Return fueling their distrust of the FBI, Mulligan and Thornton ultimately become Taken by the Dark Presence. They are made into expies of the Huotari brothers, the namesakes of the Huotari Well (serial killers who dumped their victims into the well), after the Dark Presence had previously failed to corrupt Ilmo Koskela.[1] Saga spots the possessed Mulligan after investigating her fictional life in the Watery Lighthouse Trailer Park with a cult mask, outing himself as a cult member and furthering her investigation in the story. Realizing that they have the Clicker, Saga pursues the two possessed deputies to an Overlap near Coffee World. In the Overlap, Mulligan and Thornton emerge from the well, with Mulligan firing at Saga with his shotgun and Thornton firing from afar with his hunting rifle. They are repeatedly resurrected through the Dark Presence, but Saga destroying darkness orbs around the area makes the two Taken deputies vulnerable. Mulligan and Thornton are finally killed by Saga, allowing her to retrieve the Clicker.

His body hung for display is later seen by Alan while traversing the Poet's Cinema in the Dark Place.

Trivia[]

  • While he often chastises his partner Mulligan for his offensive comments, there are hints he is similarly racist and sexist like his partner just better at hiding it and is more outwardly politically correct. His dialog with Saga and Casey in the beginning hints he never considered the possibility Saga could be the lead investigator.
  • He has applied for the position of Sheriff in the past but has never been appointed.
  • His partner whilst working is Deputy Thornton, though they are often heard bickering.
  • He's lived in Bright Falls all his life.
  • He also makes an appearance in the Alan Wake novelization, escorting Walter Snyder into a cell.
  • He is played by Robert Peters in the live action mini-series.
